AfricanAncestry.com, the pioneer in ancestry tracing for African Americans, has two marketing interships available. Interns will be responsible for generating sales of test kits, managing website and social media platforms, performing weekly analyses, and assisting in local events. Marketing Internship (Paid)

New company in Old Town Alexandria has immediate opening for a marketing intern. This is a part-time (up to 20 hrs/week) position to provide general marketing and administratrive support for the launch of the Center for Environmental Innovation and Leadership (CEILeadership.org). Initial assignment will be to create a sales database of companies that sell green products and services suitable for use in government programs. Additional duties will include website content development, marketing and sales copywriting. Applicants must have top-flight communications skills, be able to work independently and be comfortable with Internet and phone research. Prefer 3rd-year students in marketing or communications programs.

Morehouse, The CDC, & Emory Univ. Summer Program for Med & Public Health Students

OVERVIEW
The goal of the PHSF program is to encourage the pursuit of and preparation for graduate-level study for professional careers in public health. The intent of this program is to increase the number of minorities in public health professions. The collaborating institutions are: Morehouse School of Medicine, the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Over the last 10 years, support has come from the CDC through the AMHPS Cooperative Agreement. Since program inception, approximately 100 students have participated.

The program commences with an orientation. Orientation is followed by a one day diversity workshop and a 35 hour graduate course in The Principles of Public Health. Participants are assigned to community based public health internships. These research projects are supervised by experienced public health professionals and scientists. Weekly seminars will cover current public health issues. Fellows have access to libraries and activities on the campus’ of the participating institutions. The use of public transportation may be necessary to reach certain project sites. Weekly leisure group activities are planned to foster bonding and team spirit.

STIPENDS & ALLOWANCES

  • Stipend – Fellows will receive $2,000 for successfully completing the program.

Summary

The Resource Development Spring Intern will contribute to the five-person Resource Development Team.

NCLR’s Resource Development component consists of extensive corporate and individual donor programs that contribute over $1 million directly to NCLR’s operating budget. NCLR is also looking to grow its general operating support from foundations.

This is an excellent opportunity for an interested candidate to learn about NCLR and contribute to strategically targeting and reaching new constituencies. The intern will be integral to all team meetings and will be included in other component interactions. The ideal candidate will have an interest in fundraising and nonprofits. Skills learned from this internship can be applied to all types of customer/constituency outreach.

The intern’s primary duties will include conducting research on existing and prospective individual, foundation, and corporate donors. The intern will also help enhance Resource Development’s data management system (Microsoft CRM), by ensuring the quality of its data and developing systems to keep track of vital donor histories. In addition, the intern will be generating various reports and conducting strategic analysis of Resource Development data. The intern will help execute in-house direct mail campaigns and other tasks as assigned.

Description

The National Council of La Raza (NCLR)—the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States—works to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans. Through its network of nearly 300 affiliated community-based organizations (CBOs), NCLR reaches millions of Hispanics each year in 41 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform prospect research using online and hard copy resources
  • Maintain a database of Resource Development online and hard copy resources, including list servers
  • Enhance template for capturing donor profiles
  • Enter data and ensure accuracy of database entries
  • Generate and refine Resource Development reports
  • Coordinate in-house mailings to prospects and existing corporate, foundation and/or individual donors
  • Contribute to the development of database rules and quality assurance policies
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Interest and general knowledge of nonprofits and advocacy organizations a plus
  • Interest and general knowledge of fundraising and/or prospect research a plus
  • Expertise in conducting online research
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications, especially Word and Excel
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Resourcefulness and a persistent can-do attitude
  • Experience and knowledge in using relational database applications a plus

About the National Hispana Leadership Institute

The National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI), a national 501 (c) 3 organization based in Washington DC, was established in 1987 to address the underrepresentation of Latinas in the corporate, nonprofit and political arenas. NHLI’s mission is to develop Hispanas as ethical leaders through training, professional development, relationship building and community activism. NHLI is the only national organization providing executive leadership programs for Latinas in the U.S. NHLI’s programs have been recognized with several national leadership awards, and receive wide media and community attention.

Position Description: The National Hispana Leadership Institute the nation’s premier leadership development organization for Latinas, is seeking a part-time (20 hours) Communications Intern looking for a credit only internship or volunteering opportunity to start immediately until end of Spring semester or beyond if desired. The communications intern has the unique opportunity to work in and affect all major programmatic areas of the organization. The intern will work in close partnership with NHLI staff responsible for: leadership programs and conferences development; communications, media, and fundraising efforts. The communications intern will be able to take an active program role in new online initiatives. The communications intern has direct working access to NHLI’s President, who has mentored and supervised numerous leaders from across the nation. In addition, NHLI’s interns are exposed to networking, shadowing, and mentoring opportunities with national leaders, and receive ongoing professional development training from staff.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research to support communications and program work (i.e. Hispanic demographic, leadership models, etc)
  • Write media, website and program materials as assigned, including newsletter and website articles, etc.
  • Conduct interviews with NHLI’s leaders for a special online project;
  • Help coordinate NHLI’s online training series;
  • Assist with fielding media requests, conduct media monitoring, and provide network database management;
  • Conduct media and community outreach to promote NHLI events and campaigns;
  • Help coordinate NHLI’s social media outreach
  • Other tasks as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications:

  • Students pursuing the following studies or interested in these fields: English, Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, Organizational Development, Leadership and Management, Fundraising, or professionals looking for volunteering opportunities in these fields, may apply;
  • Excellent communication, analytical, interpersonal, writing, and research skills;
  • Demonstrated passion for leadership development and advancing communities of color;
  • Dependable, motivated, innovative, flexible, and able to function in a fast-paced deadline driven work environment; Highly organized and detail oriented;
  • Spanish language skills a plus.

This internship involves a range of tasks; some are administrative. The intern’s supervisor will work to make tasks and projects during the semester align, as much as possible, with the intern’s expressed interests. NHLI’s internships opportunities provide well rounded hands-on experience and valuable professional skills. As part of the internship experience, interns attend NHLI events and others as appropriate and are paired up with at least 2 networking and shadowing opportunities with NHLI alumnae and other leaders. A metro stipend is provided.

Full Scholarships @ GW for Computer Science & Information Assurance

The George Washington University (GW) is designated a federal Center for Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education - Research. This enables GW to provide government-funded full scholarships for fulltime study for upper level undergraduates, masters, and doctoral students. Scholarship recipients receive a traditional education in their chosen major enhanced by detailed knowledge in computer security and information assurance provided by additional courses that address emerging technical and government policy-related issues, often using guest lectures by government and outside experts. They also receive hands-on experience in a laboratory that demonstrates traditional and emerging attacks and defenses.

In 2009-10, we expect 12 students to pursue their bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees with federal funding from the National Science Foundation, the Defense Department, and the Department of Homeland Security. These grants are part of GW's Partnership in Securing Cyberspace through Education and Service (PISCES) program. Federal funding provides two-year full scholarships (tuition, books, stipend, and in most cases room and board) for students to study computer security and information assurance at GW or a partner university. After completing their coursework, students will help protect the nation's information infrastructure by working as security experts in a government agency for two years. Since 2002, 43 students have graduated with help from this program, earning degrees in computer science, electrical engineering, engineering management, forensic sciences, business administration, and public policy.
