The Latin American Cancer Research Coalition (LACRC) is sponsoring the Social Marketing for Health in the Latino Community course, which will be offered by the Georgetown University McDonough School of Business.  Professor Alan Andreasen, a leading social marketing practitioner and scholar, will teach the course from May 18 – May 22, 2009.

Additionally, there will be guest speakers from among the nation’s leading social marketing programs making presentations during classes. The course can be taken for 2 credits through the Georgetown School of Summer and Continuing Education. The goal of this program is to build health promotion training opportunities for minority researchers and students in Latino health. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for scholarships.

This workshop is designed to provide both introductory and advanced training in applying the latest in social marketing concepts and tools from around the world. While emphasis will be on fundamentals of social marketing, there will be particular attention to Latino target audiences.  This workshop will take a new approach to the field that will emphasize both upstream and downstream approaches to behavior change. We will look at how social marketing concepts and tools can be used to influence target audiences as well as policymakers, delivery partners, the media and others potentially involved in significant social change. Workshop sessions will be taught in English and will involve lecture-discussions, case analyses, one-on-one advice and instruction, and group exercises. Participants will have many opportunities to bring up issues they grapple with in their work, thereby customizing the program to fit their needs.

Summer Course: Social Marketing for Health in the Latino Community

May 18, 2009 – July 14, 2009

The Lombardi Cancer Center at Georgetown University is offering a ten-week summer paid internship program for undergraduate and graduate students.  The internship program includes scholarships to attend the 2-credit “Social Marketing for Health in the Latino Community” course for credit. This is an excellent opportunity for bilingual (English/Spanish) students to gain hands-on experience implementing cancer prevention research for the Latino community. Interns will work with community health clinics that serve Latinos in conducting research on cancer prevention and early detection.  In addition, this full-time program will provide interns with the opportunity to work directly with cancer prevention researchers and physicians from Georgetown University and the Washington Hospital Center.

Qualifications for the Internship

Interns must:

  • Be bilingual (English/Spanish)
  • Have an interest in health issues, particularly regarding cancer prevention
  • Have an avid interest in helping the recent Latino immigrant community in the D.C. area
  • Be interested in using the experience towards a career in the health care field

To apply for the internship program, please contact Claire Selsky at cfs25@georgetown.edu

by April 1, 2009.  Please attach a resume and a 500-word essay discussing the health areas of particular interest to you, the areas of health in which you have previously worked, and the impact that you anticipate this opportunity will have on your future career plans.
